A courtesy call by His Excellency Rafael Daerr, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Malaysia on YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Minister of Finance II was held to discuss Malaysia-EU economic cooperation and areas of mutual interest. The meeting covered potential collaboration under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative and developments relating to digital connectivity. The Minister of Finance II reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to exploring mutually beneficial investment and financing opportunities that align with international standards while adhering to Malaysia’s legal frameworks including domestic statutory requirements. This balanced approach ensures that inbound capital fosters sustainable economic growth while remaining fully aligned with national interests, social responsibility and regulatory compliance.

The meeting also highlighted opportunities to deepen Malaysia-EU cooperation in renewable energy and the ASEAN Power Grid. The Minister of Finance II underscored the importance of the ASEAN Power Grid in supporting greater deployment of renewable energy and Malaysia’s transition towards net zero while recognising the EU’s extensive experience in regional grid interconnection, technology and blended financing. Both sides welcomed continued engagement to identify areas where Malaysia’s development priorities and the EU’s international partnership initiatives can complement each other including through knowledge sharing, investment and technology cooperation.
